How much is it worth? Want to spend over £18.50 per bottle? Anything less means the producer gets less than half of what you spend (based on industry averages) - updated May 2008
* The first table on this page shows that some merchants clearly make well in excess of 30 or even 40%. As the second table shows, a £5 bottle will cost around 1.5€ ex cellars (trade price from the producer); however, we have been informed by producers that supermarkets try to strong-arm them to supply the same wine for only 1€ and still keep the £4.99 price tag, making their mark-ups around 50% even allowing for much lower shipping and bond costs - and that's before they start their so-called discounting practices! |
