Château de Beaucastel 2012 En Primeur Offer
Overall, 2012 was an extremely good vintage for the Perrin family with, generally, low acidity and good balance. Alcohol levels seem a little lower than usual which is welcome these days which was confirmed by Marc Perrin at the en primeur tasting. Generally, the Rhone had a successful, if small, harvest in 2012 and Beaucastel, as usual, leads the pack. My notes from the tasting can be found here on my blog but, in summary, apart from the obvious wines of Chateau de Beaucastel (fruit forward in the style of 2000 but with added minerality) and the modern, fruit-laden Coudoulet de Beaucastel, there are several other wines of note in this range. Interestingly for me, at least, my preferences among the crus changes from year to year although the Vinsobres seems to be a perennial favourite with its extra helping of Syrah. This year, I was particularly struck by the Cotes du Rhone Villages, presumably a new wine as I don't recall tasting it before.
