Domaine de Mourchon
"This is the best estate today in Séguret"
(Parker)
"The unquestioned leader in Séguret" (Steven Spurrier)
We met Walter McKinlay when we visited Domaine
de Mourchon as tourists around Christmas 2006.
The estate
is tucked away in the hills just outside Séguret and has stunning views. Walter has put a lot of
thought into making the estate blend well with its surroundings and has
built a stunning new winery. This combines the natural resources of the
domaine (not least gravity, still all too often overlooked as a useful
resource!) with state-of-the-art equipment set out in a both logical and
attractive manner (the picture really doesn't do it justice but Walter is
very welcoming and likes to show off his toys). This approach comes through in the wines.
Walter has attracted
favourable press for his wines ever since he started up in Séguret in 1998
since when he has
emerged as the leading producer in this small picturesque Southern Rhône
village. Parker points the right side of 90, two consecutive
Coups de Cœur
in the Guide Hachette (for the 2003 and 2004 vintages - but 2005 and 2006
are even better) and numerous other awards and citations can assure all
consumers that they have bought a quality wine before they even open the
bottle.
